Abstract
Purpose: This descriptive study aimed to establish an inventory of nursing competencies for each stage of rank and position in order to build a career development model for nursing officers in military hospitals.

Methods: The study consisted of two phases. In the first phase, we collected data to analyze the appropriate nursing competencies for each rank and position. In the second phase, we consulted 2 nursing professors and nursing officers who had served in managerial positions in the Army Headquarters.

Results: A total of 23 competencies were categorized in to 7 comprehensive groups and the stages were divided into the following categories: Pre-novice Stage(cadet or officer candidate), Novice Stage(second lieutenant), Advanced Beginner Stage(first lieutenant), Competent Stage(captain), Proficient / Low Level Manager(from senior Captain to Major), Middle Level Manager (from senior Major to Lieutenant Colonel), High Level Manager(from senior Lieutenant Colonel to
Colonel).

Conclusion: A seven-stage career ladder encompassing the core criteria and a detailed list of competencies required for each stage was created. We believe that more study will be required to further improve the study¡¯s validity and reliability.
